Bismarck swears in re-elected trustees

BISMARCK — Tuesday night’s meeting of the Bismarck Village Board started with the swearing in of re-elected trustees. Julie Boersma, Lee High and Dwayne Gettleman were sworn in for four-year terms and Karol Volpert was sworn in for a two-year term. Charles Mockbee, village attorney, administered the oath of office.

The village board approved a supplemental 2009 Motor Fuel Tax budget as presented by Ellen Hedrick of Sodemann and Associates. The supplemental budget calls for spending $50,000 on patching and seal coating various village streets.

The supplemental budget reflects the addition of the $50,000 the village previously received from the Illinois Commerce Commission for the closing of the South Street crossing over the CSX railroad tracks.

The village is still anticipating receiving another $15,000, split jointly between the Illinois Department of Transportation and CSX Railroad.

In other action, trustees:

--Learned that 63 residents participated in the village clean-up day.

--Presented a certificate of appreciation to Boy Scout Troop 309 for their assistance during the village clean-up day.

--Learned that the Bismarck Lion’s Club has set June 27 as the date for the fireworks display at the park. The rain date is June 28.

--Heard a presentation by Trina Bailey of WITS. Bailey told the board that her group collected 1,600 pounds of electronic items for recycling during the village clean-up day. Bailey also said her group had collected 55,000 pounds of electronic items for recycling in the county last year.

She told the board her group will accept most recyclable items except hazardous household chemicals, paint and tires. Bailey added that her group is accepting the new CFL light bulbs to recycle because the light bulbs contain small amounts of mercury in them. Items for recycling can be dropped off at WITS collection site at 1507 N. Bowman Avenue on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

--Learned that a contractor for AmerenCIPS is inspecting utility poles in the village.

--Learned that the Bismarck Lion’s Club and Bismarck Women’s Club will install new equipment in the park on June 6 at 8 a.m. Volunteers are welcome to join them.

--Learned from Volpert, village representative to the Keep Vermilion County Beautiful, that the Women’s Club has received a $300 grant. The grant will be used to put landscaping chips around the playground equipment and put in some flower pots and flowers in the park.

--Approved the FY2010 general fund and TIF fund budget.

--Approved the purchase of two file cabinets from Arnold’s Office Supply of Danville not to exceed $450.

--Approved having ERH Enterprises of Westville clean out 19 catch basins at a cost not to exceed $2,500.

--Approved $70 for signs that will be used in a village program to recognize residents who have been nominated for having well-kept lawns and flowers.
