GEORGETOWN — The city council approved a request from the police department Monday night to start up a fitness room.
Police Chief R. Whitney Reneker said officers have wanted the weight room for a while now.
A room at the Georgetown Community Center will serve as the weight room and will be cleaned and prepared by officers. Some equipment was donated from the Georgetown-Ridge Farm High School weight room, while other things like mats and treadmills were given by employees.
It will only be used by city employees and the 14 police officers on staff.
In other business, aldermen:
-- Casually discussed the potential of the city-owned Ouabache Pool, which is located west of town. It was reported that there is a large crack in the pool and it is too far gone for repair. Speculation about a new pool in town, one closer to the city center was raised, but realized that it would not be a money-maker, but rather would need to be subsidized by tax dollars to stay afloat.
Also, there was talk of looking into the liability and cost of a future skateboard park in town. Both the pool and skateboard park ideas were raised as potential attractions for youth in town.
-- Purchased $1,400 worth of fencing from Tractor Supply Company of Danville to enclose the platform areas around the two wells in Cayuga.
The fence enclosure is needed as a security measure to protect the controls that are located there.
-- Signed a contract to operate a booth at the 2009 Georgetown Fair. Normally, $100 is charge for booth space at the fair, but the city receives the space for free.
