County hears about tax option

BY DENNIS BARTLOW

COVINGTON, Ind. — The Fountain County Council heard a proposal Monday to add a Local Option Income Tax to offset a decrease in the circuit breaker tax, which will be reduced starting next year.

Sharon Negele, Attica clerk-treasurer, and Judy Bush, superintendent of Attica Consolidated Schools, presented information about LOIT and the need to establish such a tax by Aug. 1 to go into effect in 2010.

Negele said LOIT replaces part of the property tax dollar for dollar.

“We should consider this,” said council President Richard Klage. “I think this is good information. We have to sit down and study this.”

In other business, councilmen:

-- Learned there is not enough time to change the surtax/wheel tax ordinance for next year. Councilmen will consider a change on the semi rate at a later time.

-- Gave Auditor Colleen Chambers permission to pay $950 to Sentry Roofing for roof repairs for the department building in Attica.

--will be Sept. 14.

-- Set a tentative executive session for 4 p.m. EDT Monday with the commissioners, Solid Waste District and Concerned Citizens of Fountain County representatives to discuss a lawsuit settlement on the proposed landfill in southern Fountain County.
