Oakwood moves clean-up day

OAKWOOD — The village clean-up day has been rescheduled to June 20 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. due to a conflict with a clean-up day in another village, the village board announced Monday night..

The Oakwood clean-up day is open for Oakwood residents only and proof of identification may be required.

The collection site is at the village water tower and no hazardous chemicals, paint, tires, batteries, mattresses, yard waste or construction material will be accepted. There will be a $5 charge for appliances.

In other business, trustees:

-- Heard from Deborah Huddleson, representing her mother Katherine Huddleson, and David Lewis regarding traffic in the alley behind their residences.

According to Huddleson and Lewis there is more traffic going down the alley than goes down the street. The alley, which runs between Longstreth and Sailor streets, is used both day and night.

“There are cars going down that alley at 2 a.m.,” said Huddleson.

Huddleson said she is concerned about children playing in the area with cars speeding down the alley. She also said the problem is worse when school is in session. She believes parents are using the alley to drop their children off at Oakwood Grade School instead of driving up to the school.

Huddleson and Lewis also complained of dust that is stirred up when traffic goes down the alley.

Board members decided that a speed bump placed in the middle of the alley would be used to try to discourage traffic in the alley and that they would also try to use calcium chloride on the alley to control the dust.

-- Heard Trustee Bob Parr gave details on the July 4 parade and fireworks.

Parr said the parade will form at the corner of Oakwood and Collett streets. The parade will line up at 10 a.m. and will start at 11 a.m. Anyone wishing to participate in the parade or needing more information can contact Parr at work at (765) 793-4885 or at home at 354-4085.

The Oakwood Fire Department will sponsora breakfast that day beginning at 6 a.m. at the fire station.

The fireworks display, put on by Todd Chew of Jamaica Pyrotechnics, will begin at dusk in the park.

Persons attending festivities at the park are reminded that parking in the park is for elderly and handicapped persons only. Others may park along the streets or on the old railroad right-of-way.

In other board action, trustees:

-- Declined to make a donation towards the Vermilion County Fair beautification program. Board members felt that Oakwood Emergency Medical Services provides services during the fair at no charge and the village could not afford to make any additional contribution.

-- Heard Trustee Mitch Leverenz brought up conditions around the closed grocery store building and in the parking lot of the building. The board went outside and looked at the situation. It was decided some of the trash on the parking lot was being brought in by skateboarders. The board will have Police Chief Josh Bennett contact the owner to have the lot posted with “No Trespassing” signs. The police department cannot take any action unless the lot is posted.

WHAT’S NEXT

The Oakwood Village Board will meet at 7 p.m. July 13 in the Oakwood Village Hall.
