DANVILLE — A local man doing some weekend gardening got more than he expected on Saturday.
The University of Illinois Bomb Squad was called in when a resident in the 1300 block of Warrington Avenue dug up a grenade while he was tilling in his yard.
Sgt. James Beddow of the Vermilion County Sheriff’s Department said the grenade was thought to be from the World War II era. County officers opted to call in the bomb squad to handle the grenade.
Ironically, Beddow said this is the second grenade to be found in that yard. Another was discovered almost 15 years ago at the location, which used to be a railroad spur.
Bomb squad officers dug a hole in a nearby alley away from the home. A robot was used to pick up the aged explosive and place it in the hole before it was detonated.
Beddow said the process took about 45 minutes.
