DSO ready for new season

DANVILLE — The Danville Symphony Orchestra promises new experiences for its audience in the upcoming 44th season, while maintaining the quality its patrons have come to expect.

Season tickets for new subscribers are now on sale for the 2010-11 season, and single tickets will go on sale Sept. 7.

Jennifer Dixson, DSO executive director, said, “I’m thrilled with the diversity of music and style that the DSO will be offering the community this season. The guest artists are superb, and I expect the concerts — from pops to classical — to be crowd-pleasers.”

DSO board member Darrel Jacobs said, “This year’s schedule of performances reflects the ever-changing need to reach out to varied segments of the DSO community. Our opening concert on Oct. 9 is designed to take us back into a difficult time in our history that seems so wonderfully simple now. It will appeal to our senior citizens and at the same time touch the memory of those who equate ‘Satchmo, Fats and The Duke’ with that wonderful musical era.”

Performance dates and concert descriptions are:

Saturday, Oct. 9 at 7:30 p.m. — “Satchmo, Fats and The Duke,” with trumpeter Byron Striplig. This virtuoso serves up a gripping performance of the best from the playbooks of jazz legends Duke Ellington, Fats Waller and Louis Armstrong. Concertgoers will hear standards such as: “It Don’t Mean a Thing,” “Birth of the Blues,” “I’m Confessin’ That I Love You,” “Ain’t Misbehavin’,” “Sweet Georgia Brown” and many more.

Saturday, Dec. 11 at 3:30 p.m. — “At Home for Christmas,” with vocalist Margaret Carlson. Carlson brings a warm, easy and homey feeling to the holiday season as she presents her  variation on traditional Christmas melodies with the Danville Symphony Orchestra. Pianist Scott Stephenson will join her on stage for an afternoon holiday concert to remember.

Saturday, March 12, at 7:30 p.m. — “The History and Mystery of England,” with oboist Andrea Gullickson. The DSO takes you on a musical mystery tour of England’s great and beautiful music under the direction of Maestro Jeremy Swerling. The concert features a regal coronation march by William Walton; a pastoral oboe concerto by Ralph Vaughan Williams, performed by Butler University’s award-winning Gullickson; and Elgar’s masterful testimonial to his friends, the popular and unsolved Enigma Variations.

Saturday, April 30, at 7:30 p.m. — “Flamenco Fire!” with guitarist Robert Michaels. This Spanish-inspired concert will close the regular season and turn up the heat on the upcoming summer. From Gershwin’s “Cuban Overture” and Manuel DeFalla’s “Ritual Fire Dance,” to Michaels’ own hair-raising flamenco selections, his upbeat and contemporary performance with the DSO will leave the audience exhilarated.

All concerts will be at the Danville High School auditorium, 202 E. Fairchild St.

Season tickets for adults are $90 in section A and $80 in Section B. Senior season tickets are $83 in Section A and $73 in Section B. Student season tickets are available for $50 in either section.

Single tickets for adults are $26 in section A and $24 in section B. Senior tickets are $24 in section A and $22 in section B. Student tickets are available for $13 in either section

Jeremy Swerling, music director of the DSO, said, “It can’t be said enough times how fortunate Danville is to have an orchestra of this quality. I’m truly honored to be the Danville Symphony’s music director.”
