Quilting group helps Peer Court

DANVILLE — The Vermilion County Quilter’s Guild donated a quilt Tuesday morning to the Peer Court program for its annual fundraiser auction.

The quilt, made by Joy Boggs and community quilt organizer Barb Monson, features photographs of old city landmarks in Danville.

Guild president Janice Chewning obtained historical images of Lincoln Park, the Ellsworth Bridge, the Carnegie Library and more from the Vermilion County Museum.

Chewning said the guild has donated quilts to Peer Court for the past four years.

“Everybody really thinks Peer Court is a great organization, so we all pitch in and help out to make something every year,” she said.

Peer Court Assistant Director Katie Osterbur said the auction will be Feb 19 at the Turtle Run Banquet Center. A preview of items to be auctioned will begin at 6 p.m. The auction will start at 7 p.m. Complimentary appetizers and desserts will be offered. All proceeds will go to funding the program, Osterbur said.

Peer Court is a program that serves first-time juvenile offenders in Vermilion County. If they successfully complete the program, the charges against them are dropped and they get a chance to keep their record clean, Osterbur said. She has worked at Peer Court for three years and said the majority of the young people who complete the program don’t become repeat offenders.

“It truly does make a difference in the lives of kids,” Osterbur said. “We want to teach kids that there are people that truly do care about them and who want to see them do well.”
