DANVILLE — Walk into the new Kohl’s store and it’s like getting a new car and experiencing that new car smell.

The new carpet, paint and new store all contribute to the scent, and the brightly-colored displays of cosmetics, clothes, kitchenware all look good.

The store is undergoing some last-minute touches, but store manager Andrew Immormino said the staff will be ready for the store opening at 9 a.m. Sunday. The store will be open its first day from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Residents will have three days to shop before the store’s official grand opening on Wednesday.

There will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony with Mayor Scott Eisenhauer, aldermen and other local officials at 7:45 a.m. Wednesday, followed by the store officially opening its doors at 8 a.m. at 3707 N .Vermilion St. The store will be open Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday will see even longer hours of 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.

There will be store-wide sales for the grand opening.

Immormino was formerly assistant store manager of a Kohl’s store in Aurora. He’s excited to manage this store and be a part of bringing Kohl’s to Danville.

The Danville store was built according to a prototype that received Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification at the Gold level from the U.S. Green Building Council.

The store has water-efficient landscaping and plumbing fixtures, an energy-efficient roof and other “green” features, Immormino said.

He added that the store is “all about the customer.” The customer service desk is on the left of the front entrance.

The store has many new features such as enhanced fixtures and more depth for products in its cosmetics area, a new watch display that the Danville Kohl’s is the only Illinois store to have, more streamlined cases in the jewelry area, electronic sales price signs on racks and Kohl’s Kiosks for online shopping for sizes and styles not found in store.

There is a toy section at the far back of the store, which will grow at Christmastime, Immormino said.

There also is a seasonal area, which has patio furniture featured now; in addition to Hallmark cards; luggage; bedding and mattresses; and other house ware items in addition to men’s, women’s and children’s clothing and shoe sections.

There also is athletic wear, including University of Illinois and Chicago Cubs items. Immormino also pointed out the store carries more window coverings, and a wide range of dishes and cookware from the point of preparing food to putting it on the table.

Ashley Kincaid, area supervisor for apparel and accessories, said she’s excited for the public to start shopping at the “nice and pretty” store.

“It’s great for the community,” Kincaid said about Kohl’s opening.

The store is the 66th Kohl’s store open in Illinois. The Danville store is one of nine opening this spring. The new stores nationwide are hiring about 950 employees. The Danville store has about 105 employees.

For the Kohl’s project, the city put together a $2 million incentive package — $800,000 in federal and state economic development funding and a $1.2 million line of credit for the land purchase, site work and other costs.

The $800,000 reimburses Continental Properties, the developer for Kohl’s, for a portion of its costs in designing, acquiring, leasing and constructing the project.

The sales tax revenue generated from the project is to repay the loan within five years or less, city officials have said.

“Kohl’s is excited to open the doors to the new Danville location, offering great savings on quality, stylish brands while helping shoppers to stay within their budgets,” said Jeff Leitner, district manager for the new Kohl’s location, in a press release.

Shoppers can take advantage of Kohl’s Cash coupons, Night Owl and Early Bird specials, gift registry, Kohl’s Charge and Shoppers 60-plus.

Kohl’s also strives to be an active member in cities where the company does business, through charitable giving and volunteer programs for children’s health and education and environmental initiatives.

Kohl’s supports local communities through the Kohl’s Cares philanthropic programs.

In Danville, Kohl’s already has donated money to Big Brothers Big Sisters and other organizations.

Kohl’s Danville store will sell Kohl’s Cares merchandise throughout the year with 100 percent of the net profit benefiting kids’ health and education initiatives.
