Panel to consider pact for Walgreen’s

BY JENNIFER BAILEY

DANVILLE — Aldermen on Tuesday will consider approving a redevelopment agreement for property tax abatements for the new Walgreen’s to be built at the southwest corner of Fairchild and Gilbert streets.

The city council’s Public Services Committee will consider the agreement with Blackstone Group Missouri, LLC, in connection with the city’s Midtown Tax Increment Financing District.

Public Development Director John Heckler said the agreement is similar to the one with the Marathon gas station and Mach 1 convenience store at Williams and Gilbert streets.

The 2007 agreement with property owner Wortman-Meyer Properties included 50 percent property tax abatements for 10 years.

Heckler said construction on the new Walgreen’s is expected this year.

“This was discussed a while back,” Heckler said of the redevelopment agreement.

Construction now can begin, with Wells Fargo finding a new location.

Aldermen previously approved an easement agreement with Blackstone Group of Springfield as part of Walgreen’s plans to move from the southeast to southwest corner of Gilbert and Fairchild streets.

Also Tuesday, the committee will consider several budget amendments with the end of the city’s fiscal year approaching; and authorizing Clifton Gunderson to perform auditing services for fees not to exceed $39,900 for the city and $3,300 for the library.

The city council’s Public Services Committee will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Robert E. Jones Municipal Building, 17 W. Main St.
