D118 finalizes school board ballot

DANVILLE — An election lottery conducted Wednesday morning has determined the ballot placement of six candidates vying for the Danville District 118 school board. All six had filed nominating petitions at the same time on the first day of filing on Dec. 17.

Martha See, school board secretary, will file the official school board ballot today with the Vermilion County Clerk.

The order in which all nine of the candidates’ names will be listed on the official ballot is: Lon Henderson, Johnnie L. Carey, Phyllis T. Roth, Greg Hilleary, David Woodrow, Darlene M. Halloran, Daniel D. Brown, Frank R. Young and Dr. Randal Ashton.

Hilleary, Brown, Young and Ashton are incumbents. The seats all carry a four-year term on the board.

See said the lottery, which is simple but effective, drew four spectators Wednesday morning. They were Carey, Roth, Henderson and Halloran.

“They showed up to the proceedings, and it took all of three minutes,” See said.

See explained that “whoever came in at 8 a.m. on the first day of filing, I put their names in alphabetical order with the numbers 1 through 6 next to the names.”

“I then cut up the numbers and put them into the lottery,” she said.

After the six numbers were drawn, the remaining names will appear on the ballot in the order the candidates filed their nominating petitions, See said.

Ashton has the distinction of being the last candidate to file a petition in the last hour before the Dec. 26 filing deadline.
