Life guard program offered

VEEDERSBURG, Ind. — The American Red Cross is offering a life guarding certification program, which is recognized nationwide.

Pre-testing will be from 6-7:30 p.m. EST Feb. 11 during open swim nights at the pool at the Fountain Central High School, 750 E. US Highway 136, or by special arrangements.

Classes will run from 9 a.m. EST to 4 p.m. EST with a noon lunch break on Feb. 17, 24 and then March 2, 3, 9 and 10.

Lifeguard training candidates must be at least 15 years of age by April 1, able to demonstrate 300 yards of continuous swim along with other qualifications.

Upon successful course completion, lifeguard training candidates will receive an American Red Cross Lifeguarding and Standard First Aid certificate valid for three years and a CPR/AED for Lifeguards certificate valid for one year.

Course cost: $150. Make checks out to “BSA Crew 272” and turn them in to John McClure, FC Aquatics Director after passing the pre-test.

CPR Renewal Certification program also will be offered from 9 a.m. EDT to noon EDT March 30.

Lifeguard Renewal Certification program will be offered from 9 a.m. EDT to 4 p.m. EDT March 10. The cost is $20 per renewal.

Many schools, with the exception of Crawfordsville High School, will award an elective physical education credit for students who pass the program. Call instructor Brian Walker at (765) 295-1548 or coach McClure with questions.

Many guards go on to work at college pools and YMCAs year round as well as church camps, school pools town pools and private clubs.
