Snow creates morning traffic hazard

DANVILLE — The forecast this morning was for scattered flurries. But motorists in and around the Danville area, however, encountered much more.

Blowing snow lessened visibility and caused slick conditions as far north as Bismarck Road and south to Interstate 74 Thursday morning.

The result, according to city and county scanner traffic, was a count of at least 15 traffic accidents between 8 and 8:30 a.m. today. Only one crash — at the corner of Fairchild and Gilbert streets — was reported with minor injuries and those involved declined an ambulance.

Comments from Danville officers and Vermilion County deputies on scanner traffic this morning noted several slick areas, including the corner of Voorhees and North Vermilion streets where one office said he “just watched three cars slide through.”

A deputy issued a warning over the scanner for traffic turning east from North Vermilion Street onto West Newell Road, calling the turn “nothing but ice.”

The list of accidents between 8 and 8:30 a.m. included two accidents on Interstate 74 at the 215 mile marker, two others on at different locations on Bismarck Road and crashes at the intersections of Williams and Gilbert streets, Vermilion and Voorhees streets and Griffin and Fairchild streets, among others.
