VEEDERSBURG, Ind. —
The Cain Wildcats 4-H Club makes 4-H more than just project time.
For the fourth year in a row, club members have sold sweet corn ready to eat at the fair. They added funnel cakes this year.
“The money is used for taking a trip at the end of the year and to help someone in need,” Dawn DePugh, one of the leaders of the 71-member club said Monday as the group prepared for the night’s sales.
“The kids shuck it and cook it and then sell it,” DePugh said.
A nearby farmer provides the corn.
“We found no one was doing this,” said Steve Philpott, another leader of the club. “The kids take turns manning the booth.”
Club members Tessa Philpott and Nate and Nash DePugh were busy getting the corn ready to cook.
“It is a lot of fun,” said Nate, 15. The group sold four dozen ears Sunday and hoped to top that number Monday night.
Nate is involved in aerospace, wildlife, electricity and miscellaneous crafts.
His brother, Nash, 10, took photography, aerospace and electricity.
“My parents were involved in 4-H and they told me to get involved,” said Tessa, 16. In her seventh year, she took aerospace, leather and junior leaders.
Club members aren’t sure where they are going this year, but they have gone to Holiday World, Columbian Park in Lafayette and to a church in Lafayette that has a pool and games.
Another group, the Attica High School FFA provides games for kids in a four-hour period each night.
Macon Beck, FFA advisor, said the Fountain County 4-H Council, asked the FFA if they would be interested in providing games.
“We babysit the kids,” said Beck. A wading pool is filled with corn for the kids to play in.
At special times particular games and activities are provided.
“We have had several kids participate,” she said.
