Signs to highlight city's connection to Lincoln
The Vermilion County Museum Society and the Danville Area Convention and Visitors’ Bureau will dedicate two new Looking for Lincoln Wayside Exhibits at 2 p.m. Monday.
The first ceremony will be at the museum, 116 N. Gilbert St., followed by a ceremony at the Robert E, Jones Municipal Building, 17 W. Main St.
The storyboards — complete with pictures, images and historical text — tell unique stories about Abraham Lincoln and his Vermilion County ties, according to a press release.
Done in vibrant colors, the story board, sponsored by the Vermilion County Museum Society at the North Gilbert Street location, tells the story of Lincoln and his association with Dr. William Fithian. The second wayside exhibit, sponsored by the Danville Area Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, will be placed in the municipal building’s parking lot after renovations. It acquaints the visitor with Lincoln in his early years as a circuit riding attorney and his law office in Danville.
Landscaping for the exhibit installed at the museum was donated by Berry’ s Garden Center and Floral Shop. The museum has received an anonymous donation of $25,000 to commemorate the 151st anniversary of Lincoln’s speech from the museum balcony on Sept. 28, 1858. The donation was given to honor the work the museum does to promote Lincoln in Vermilion County.
These wayside exhibits join the already existing exhibit dedicated last year in Kresge Park. The acquisition of the exhibits was made possible through a grant from the Looking for Lincoln Coalition. Looking for Lincoln is a consortium of Lincoln related communities, including Danville, which has been designated to manage the new Abraham Lincoln National Heritage Area. Hal Smith, executive director of the coalition will be among those attending the unveiling.
