DANVILLE — A newly expanded drum and bugle corps will have an open house Saturday for interested young people.
Registration will be from 8-8:30 a.m., followed by participation and demonstrations until 1:30 p.m. at South View Middle School.
KnightFire Drum and Bugle Corps is holding the open house to spread the word to young people ages 16-21 and also older people who are willing to donate time and services.
Young people may bring their own instruments (drums and horns, but no woodwind instruments) or some will be provided. They do not need to know how to play an instrument.
“We’ll take anybody who wants to come,” director Gary Schumann said. “This gives kids a chance to see what a drum corps is all about.”
Another open house will be Dec. 12.
KnightFire formed in 2006 as a percussion ensemble with the desire to provide continuing education in the marching arts. The group has performed in dozens of parades and provided stand-still entertainment at various events around Illinois.
This year, the ensemble received a donation from Tom Day and Bugles Across America to add horns and color guard to the percussion program. The group thus became a full drum and bugle corps, which will compete in the new Small Drum Corps Association Circuit.
KnightFire is a venturing post with the Boy Scouts of America.
The group’s Web site is http://www.knightfirepercussion.com.
