Water issues persist in Veedersburg

VEEDERSBURG, Ind. — Water problems are improving but still persist in some places town council members heard Tuesday night.

Town Superintendent Paul Keeling said in some places in town, those mostly located on dead-end water lines, still have dirty, iron-rich water. Keeling said the directional flushing the town learned about through the Indiana Alliance of Rural Water has helped a lot.

Anyone who is still experiencing a lot of iron in their water should contact Keeling, who promises that his crew will come and flush lines to try to remedy the problem. Keeling said Tamra Roberts from Indiana Department of Environmental Management said the Reox the town tried out last year to clean the lines may have had some impact on the town’s current water problem. Roberts recommended that the town just keep on flushing its lines.

In other business, council members:

-- Discussed the poor service they have received this year from Utility Services of Perry, Ga. Utility Services is contracted with the town to annually clean and perform maintenance on the town’s water tower. Their work on the water tower during this past summer might have been a contributing factor to the town’s current dirty water problem. The council agreed to look into canceling the town’s contract with Utility Services.

-- Heard about the sewer problem Andrew Karushis had at his house at 1303 N. College St. Karushis explained that since the town’s sewer line was plugged, the sewer backed up into his sewer tank pump. The repairs to his sewer pump totaled $704. Town board members will consider paying for Karushis’s repairs after talking to the town’s insurance carrier.

-- Heard Keeling recommend the town create a legal document stating the town will not be held liable for damages if a sewer line backs up into someone’s house while the town is flushing sewer lines, because the house does not having a check valve on its sewer line.

-- Turned down a quit claim deed from Steven Menardo, the owner of the vacant house at 202 W. Jackson St.

Town Attorney Stuart Welliever said a lot of the information in the deed was inaccurate and a lot of it would have to be corrected if the town really wanted to take the house from Menardo. Town council members agreed they don’t want to own the house, but they do plan on moving forward with getting it demolished.

-- Will have a tree removed from Gardner Bowers’ property at 844 Knob Hill Drive.

WHAT’S NEXT

The Veedersburg Town Council will meet at 6 p.m. EST Dec. 8 at the Veedersburg Municipal Building.
