WESTVILLE — Village trustees approved the village’s portion of the East and West Main Street resurfacing project to be done next year.
Earlier this month, the Illinois Department of Transportation awarded Cross Construction of Champaign the bid for the project. Cross Construction was the low bidder at $379,000. The village’s share of the project will be $160,000.
Trustees also approved the low bid of $7,200 from Countryman Construction of Penfield for the removal of metal light poles along East and West Main Street. The bid also covers the cost of installing handicap accessible ramps for sidewalks and removing old curbing.
The fate of the police chief and police captain came up for consideration again. Police Chief Allan Mackiewicz and Captain David Booe had been appointed on a 30-day appointment by Mayor Jeff Ellis after they both failed to receive support from trustees.
Mackiewicz and Booe both were narrowly approved for a oneyear appointment on Tuesday night. Trustees voted 4-3 for a one-year appointment of Mackiewicz as police chief with Ellis casting the tie-breaking vote.
The vote for Booe was four votes in favor of a one-year appointment as police captain and three trustees abstaining to vote with Ellis again casting the deciding vote.
In other council action, trustees:
Approved the purchase of DUI goggles for the police department at a cost of $900. The goggles are used for demonstrations at area schools to simulate the effects of driving under the influence. The goggles will paid for out of the police department DUI fund.
Learned that the unaccounted for water in the water department is down to 11 percent. The national average is 15 percent. The gas and water department has been aggressively trying to locate all leaks within the village.
Learned that the Belgium Village Board has voted to turn over its water lines to Westville to maintain.
Approved the purchase of a new steel door with a push bar on the inside for the senior center from Carter Lumber of Westville for $504.
Approved Christmas bonuses of $50 for full-time employees and $25 for part-time employees.
