COVINGTON, Ind. — The Fountain County Courthouse is now on the National Register of Historic Places.

Four members of the Historical Landmarks of Fountain County presented the Fountain County Commissioners with a plaque Monday that will be placed on the outside of the building.

Commissioners filed for the designation more than a year ago, and the Historic Landmarks of Fountain County followed up with state and regional officials.

"We hope being on the Register will help us get federal funds for the murals," said Malinda Shepherd, president of the Historical Landmarks of Fountain County.

The murals, which have made the courthouse famous, are again in need of repair. The last time they were repaired was 1980.

"This may be an opportunity to get help," said Nancy Wagner, a member of Historic Landmarks who spearheaded the 1980 repairs. "It (the mural) is such a treasury."

Others present from the historical group were Carol Freese and Kathy Haas.

In other business, commissioners:

-- Heard a presentation by Virginia Scherer, director of the ambulance services, and Brian Walker on getting everyone in the county connected to someone who can handle Automated External Defibrillators within 3 minutes.

"No one in a rural environment has something like this," said Walker, who is writing a grant.

He said Seattle and O'Hare airports have setups.

-- Hired Aircom Manufacturing of Indianapolis to service the heating and air-conditioning system at the jail. They will check and change filters for $1,475 each time.

-- Named John Shambach to the Covington/Veedersburg Public Library Board.

WHAT'S NEXT

The Fountain County Commissioners will meet at 6:30 p.m. EST Dec. 21 at the courthouse.
