Slick roads cause problems

DANVILLE — Wednesday’s high winds and cold temperatures combined to create slick roads and keep police officers busy.

Capt. Dennis Wood of the Vermilion County Sheriff’s Department said his department received several reports early Wednesday of vehicles sliding off of Interstate 74 through Danville.

“We called IDOT (Illinois Department of Transportation), and they were out there quick,” Wood said Wednesday night. The area from the Bowman exit to past Tilton was really slick. But once they put whatever it is they use on the roads down, it cleared up pretty quick.”

Wood said Illinois State Police troopers also responded to several vehicles off I-74 along with the sheriff’s deputies.

The high winds — Danville received at least one gust of 55 mph according to Rick Harper at the Vermilion County Emergency Management Agency — also knocked out power in various parts of the county.

Ameren CILCO reported 176 customers without power in Catlin around 10 a.m. Wednesday. Service was restored in about an hour.

Outages also were reported in several other locations due to limbs falling on wire and broken utility poles.

As of 8 p.m. Wednesday, Ameren reported only one Vermilion County customer without electricity.

Officials in west central Indiana said they had not received any reports of problems as of early Wednesday evening.
