Peer Court plans fundraising auction

DANVILLE — A litany of items will be up for bid at the Auction Extravaganza put on by Peer Court Inc.

The annual event has run for more than a decade and offers a variety of donated items in live and silent auctions on Friday at the Turtle Run Golf and Banquet Center, 332 E. Liberty Lane. Overall, 60 items will be available in the live auction and 60 items up for bids in the silent auction, the latter being an increase compared to two years ago.

Paul Sermersheim, executive director of Peer Court, said the auction has changed from its beginnings as a more formal event when an art gallery would provide pieces to be bid on.

“Now people can come in, sit at tables and relax and have fun,” Sermersheim said, adding the event has packed Turtle Run each of the last few years.

The event’s auction preview runs from 6-7 p.m. Friday with hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar provided by Peer Court. Both the silent and live auctions will get underway at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $10 and will be available at the door.

The Auction Extravaganza is the main fundraising event put together by the Peer Court, representing as much as 20-25 percent of the earnings for the program each year.

“We’re lucky. It’s a generous community,” Sermersheim said.

In recent years, the items of interest have included a ride in a two-seat World War II T-6 plane and garden tea party for young girls as well as a variety of art pieces and gift baskets.

Sermersheim said the T-6 plane ride is back on the auction block this year as well as a variety of pottery and quilts made by local residents. In addition, a wine tasting party will be available and Gaudio and Sons donated a beer tasting event for bidding.

The gift baskets include, among other items, autographed sports memorabilia, two separate sets of University of Illinois basketball tickets and gourmet dinners prepared and delivered to your home.

The Peer Court program has worked with first-time juvenile offenders in Vermilion County for 15 years, teaching the youths to take responsibility for their actions. Through a court/jury scenario of their peers, the offenders are sentenced to community service, apologies, essays and other penalties intended to improve the youths’ choices in life.
