Covington officials discuss traffic concerns

COVINGTON, Ind. — City council members heard Monday from several residents about unsafe alley traffic on the west side of Eleventh Street between Liberty and Spring streets.

Randy and Allison Hankins are concerned the alley directly behind Trojan Mart and the car wash on Eleventh Street is being used too often as a short cut. Randy Hankins said what used to be grass has turned into a dirt road. Police Chief Larry Weber said a barricade has been put up on Union Street to prevent drivers from cutting through.

Shirley Gouty, Sarah Beedle and Lou Plunkett were concerned about people taking short cuts in the same area near their homes. Gouty said that “it’s gotten really bad.”

All were concerned for the safety of children playing in the area. City attorney Rich Rennick suggested the city place more barricades at the alley exits west of Benjamin’s Restaurant on Eleventh Street while the intersection on Liberty Street is closed for three weeks. The council agreed and no outlet signs also will be put up on Spring and Union streets.

In other business, council members:

Listened to concerns from resident Gary Schlarf about the road repairs for Washington Street after the Liberty Street project is finished since local traffic has used it as a detour. Mayor Brad Crain promised Washington Street will get the attention it needs after the project. Schlarf also was concerned about the damage caused by school buses turning onto Washington Street at Eleventh Street.

Heard concerns from Matt Keele about unauthorized traffic using the city’s water tower access road. Keele said he is worried that a serious accident is going to happen. Crain said that eventually a gate is going to be installed on east end of the access road.

Heard from electric Superintendent Dave Clodfelder that all light poles are in the ground on Liberty Street from Fourth to Eleventh streets. Clodfelder said they have been keeping up with the state’s construction crew as they have worked along Liberty Street.

Heard from Superintendent Rick Smith that residents still are leaving brush and lawn clippings on the street. Smith said Crockett Street in particular has a bad brush and limb problem. Smith wants the council to consider creating an ordinance at the next meeting if people don’t stop putting their brush in the street.
