DANVILLE — The city’s push for a reduction in public and Section 8 government subsidized housing comes to a vote Tuesday night.
Final action comes at the city council meeting on the city’s consolidated Community Development Block Grant plan.
The plan’s public housing section includes city recommendations that “be embraced by the Danville Housing Authority and pursued as goals to the greatest extent feasible.”
The recommendations within the next three to four years are: reduce the number of public housing units from 537 to 211, reduce the number of Section 8 Vouchers from 620 to 397, apply preference points to housing applicants resident in Vermilion County and increase the number of work/community volunteerism hours required of public housing residents.
Some wording changes have been made.
“I worked with the Mayor (Scott Eisenhauer) and softened and focused it better …,” Danville Neighborhood Development Manager John Dreher said.
Dreher said the focus is more on replacing the outdated Fair Oaks compound-type housing with more modern mixed-income, scattered site housing.
Also Tuesday, the city council will consider:
-- Approving a liquor license for Harrison Park Golf Course and a new three-year golf pro agreement with John Smith, who would be the liquor license holder and receive the revenue.
The golf shop will be leased to John and his wife, Lori, and commissions are redistributed and account for the salary reduction and the inclusion of lease and liquor license impacts.
-- Authorizing $58,500 in professional services by Farnsworth Group of Champaign for the Carver Park renovation project.
Public Works Director Doug Ahrens said the cost is less than 10 percent of the project cost.
Ward 1 Alderman Rickey Williams Jr. asked last week why the work was needed when the city already had city employee Steve Lane’s drawings.
Ahrens and city engineer David Schnelle said city engineers don’t have the time to do the topographical survey and additional architectural and engineering work needed.
-- Authorizing funding applications for the Fairchild Subway replacement project.
-- Authorizing the vacation of an alleyway in the 100 block of Jackson Street for Danville Mass Transit.
-- Approving the 2010 overlay program, and authorizing motor fuel tax funds for the Main Street improvement already completed from Buchanan to Gilbert streets.
-- Authorizing MFT funds for lighting and landscaping improvements on International Drive and International Place for ThyssenKrupp.
-- Approving a special-use permit for an athletic center at 400 Sager St. in the B1 Neighborhood Business Zoning District.
-- Rezoning a house at 622 S. Bowman Ave. from R2 single-family residential medium density to B2 highway business for the purpose of operating an office/retail establishment.
