Salvation Army close to fundraising goal

DANVILLE — The Danville Salvation Army is close to meeting its Red Kettle campaign goal for 2012.

Sharon Sawka, director of social services at the Danville Salvation Army, said the Red Kettle drive that ended Dec. 24, as well as online and mailed donations, brought in about $113,000 as of Jan. 16 — with more donations still coming in via mail and online pledges.

The campaign goal was $115,000, up from last year’s mark of $110,000.

The Salvation Army at 855 E. Fairchild St., a United Way of Danville Area agency, will know by late-January how much money was collected all together.

“We’re very, very close,” Sawka said. “There could be more money that comes in this week.”

The funds collected during the annual campaign covers the local Salvation Army’s day-to-day operations for a year.

The money supports social services, programming, bills, employees’ pay, food pantry, Christmas baskets and clothing vouchers and helps citizens pay for utilities, rent or shelter and medicine.

The Red Kettle drive makes up about one-third of the annual Salvation Army budget, with mail appeals, grant money, United Way money and other donations making up the other two-thirds of the budget.

This year, the Danville corps received a rare South African Krugerrand gold coin wrapped in a taped-up $10 bill in a kettle at the Village Mall County Market. It’s worth about $1,750.

The local Salvation Army has been fortunate to receive a Krugerrand every year for the last several years.
