VEEDERSBURG, Ind. — Animal control officer Jim Abernathy and police officer Andrew Krout told town council members Tuesday night how a vicious dog broke off its chain recently and nearly attacked a Vectrin worker.

Abernathy and Krout agreed something needs to be done about the aggressive dogs in town before the animals attack or bite anyone. Currently, if a dog is caught running loose in town its owner is given only a warning on the first offense and then fined for any additional offenses.

Council members agreed to look into the ordinance. Town attorney Stuart Welliever will look into the town’s current nui-sance ordinance concerning dogs for the March 9 meeting.

In other business, council members:

-- Heard from waste water Superintendent Connie Sichts the town’s recent meeting with MasterGuard went well. MasterGuard requested some changes to its metal testing frequencies. Sichts approved the changes and town council members approved the amendment to change MasterGuard’s sewer use permit. Sichts said they also discussed her concerns about the nickel levels in the waste water. MasterGuard agreed to keep good, regular correspondence with Sichts. Council members discussed a desire to tour the MasterGuard plant and the Krupp plant.

-- Discussed the fact Tax Increment Financing money cannot be used outside of the TIF district.

-- Learned only two claims were turned in from residents regarding damages from the town water problem last fall. The claims were handled by volunteers in town who assisted with the situation.

-- Heard a request from Abernathy to purchase a live trap for dogs and cats. Council members asked Abernathy get pricing on the traps.

-- Heard from town Marshal Neil Beck that he is looking to purchase eight new .40 caliber, Glock hand guns for the department for about $3,500. The new guns would replace the department’s three .38-caliber revolvers and four .40-caliber semi-automatic pistols. Beck still is looking into exact pricing, but said that the department could trade in the old guns or sell them to the public. Welliever said that the old weapons will have to be declared surplus in order to sell them to the public.
