DANVILLE —
Several new activities are planned for the 9th annual Summer Health and Safety Fair at Fair Oaks.
This year, the fair will be 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at the Fair Oaks Housing Complex off Fairchild Street at 1607 Clyman Lane. The outdoor event is at the Fair Oaks pavilion, near the basketball courts.
Lakeview College of Nursing and the Danville Housing Authority sponsor the event.
More than 400 children and their parents attend the event each year.
Activities planned include a wide variety of health, safety and community information booths for the public housing residents.
New this year, the Olive Branch Lodge will be providing a child identification program, C.H.I.P.S., whereby they will take fingerprints, DNA swabs, photos and a video that parents will receive.
Also, Danville School District 118 will have pre-kindergarten sign-ups available, and the Vermilion County Sheriff’s Department and the Danville Fire Department will be providing safety information.
There also will be Tae Kwon Do demonstrations provided by KDI, in addition to blood pressure and mental health screenings, a DJ, food and raffles.
Tamera Forthenberry, DHA family services director, said as always there will be booths and social service agencies at the fair.
Lakeview nursing students have special teaching projects, Forthenberry said.
There also will be cotton candy, popcorn, snow cones, nachos, hot dogs and pop, in addition to face painting, an obstacle course, relay races and raffles of bicycles and school supplies.
“We’re hoping to have clowns this year,” Forthenberry added.
She said many children look forward to the event.
“Everybody asks about it as soon as the summer food program starts,” she said.
DHA executive director Greg Hilleary said the fair is a great educational event.
“I think it’s a great opportunity for the residents to see the different local organizations here in the community that can possibly assist them,” Hilleary said.
He also thanks American Pavilion for providing a tent to assist with more shade for the event.
