Police looking for shooting suspect

DANVILLE — Danville police have obtained an arrest warrant for a suspect in the weekend shooting death of a Danville man.

Vermilion County State’s Attorney Randy Brinegar confirmed Tuesday afternoon that police obtained the warrant on Monday for Derrick L. Miller, 33, of Danville and originally from Chicago.

Miller is wanted on four counts of first-degree murder in connection with the shooting of 19-year-old Scottie Polk of Danville. Polk died of multiple gunshot wounds late Sunday afternoon.

A charge of aggravated battery with a firearm, a Class X felony, also was included on the arrest warrant for Miller.

Brinegar said the charges carry with them a maximum of 60 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections and a minimum of 45 years, if convicted.

Brinegar could not comment on the exact details of the shooting incident, but indicated the homicide is the result of a dispute between the men, who knew each other. At this point, it does not appear to be drug related, he added.

A man was walking around 5:30 p.m. Sunday in the area of Lape Street and Fairweight Avenue when he heard a person groaning and discovered Polk lying in the street. Polk was taken to Provena United Samaritans Medical Center where he died a short time later.

Following an autopsy on Monday, Vermilion County Coroner Peggy Johnson confirmed that Polk died as a result of multiple gunshot wounds.

Danville police have not released further details regarding the case. The investigation into the shooting is continuing.

Miller has not been charged with any prior felony offenses in Vermilion County. Since 2010, he received probation terms on criminal damage to property and domestic battery charges and has served time in the Public Safety Building jail when he was found in violation of probation.
