Hoopeston council pays boring bills

HOOPESTON — City council members voted unanimously Tuesday to pay Shaw engineers a $31,886.70 payment for borings on the CVS property and the 3½ acres north of CVS at Tuesday’s meeting.

This was a $3,886 increase above the amount originally agreed upon last August.

Alderman Bill Goodwine, finance chairman, added that Shaw had requested another $5,000.

"Shaw and the city has since parted company," Goodwine said. "We do have to pay the $31,886.70, but not the $5,000."

Originally, borings were done on the property nine years ago by Shaw, which produced a "No Further Remediation Letter" from the EPA for the Brownfield site. However, the paperwork showing the results of the borings turned up missing last year. The site developer was selling the property to another company and needed a copy of the EPA’s letter by Oct. 31 to complete the sale. The council waived bids in favor of Shaw to expedite matters for the developer.

Since Shaw and the city parted company, Goodwine said he has been working with Mike Streff, Foth Infrastructure & Environmental engineer, who said the NFR letter covered the whole property from CVS to Crown Ford.

In other business, council members:

Learned Streff would send the 90 percent drawings for the water treatment improvements by March 15th to the City of Hoopeston.

Learned Neal Tire would not start golf cart inspections until April 1.

Hoopeston City council members will meet at 7 p.m. March 19 in City Hall, 301 W.  Main St.
