Evelyn A. March

DANVILLE — As the sun was rising, Evelyn A. March, 91, of Danville, peacefully passed into eternity with the risen Savior at 5:04 a.m. Wednesday, June 20, 2012, at Hawthorne Inn, Danville.

Born Dec. 8, 1920, she was the daughter of William and Pearl Higgs-Puckett.

Evelyn attended Danville schools and graduated from Danville High. She retired from General Electric and spent her retirement years traveling and enjoying family and friends. Evelyn accepted Christ at an early age and joined Carter Metropolitan CME Church in 1947. There she remained a faithful member for 65 years.

During her years at Carter, she was a longtime member of the Episcolite Choir and the Senior Usher Board. Evelyn was a classy lady and took great pride in contributing to the ongoing success of Carter’s annual Mammoth Tea. She also was a member of the Daughter of Isis and lifetime member of the Ritzy Matrons.

Evelyn married Forrest C. “Socky” March on Dec. 24, 1941, in Danville. Together, they celebrated 52 years of marriage before Socky’s death on Feb. 10, 1994. Socky and Evelyn were the proud parents of one son, Robert A. Puckett.

She leaves to cherish her memory four grandchildren, Kelly J. Odomes (Danny) of Danville, Jaya D. Glover (Chris) and Forrest R. Puckett, both of Anderson, S.C., and Yaisa Smith of Los Angeles, Calif.; 20 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; daughters-in-law, Maxine Puckett and Charlene Randle; sister-in-law, Sarah Brigham; cousins, Floy Severado and George Fletcher; goddaughter, Janet Reese; and longtime friends, Romadale Austin, Mary Thompson, Bernica Thompson, Melvina Shaw, Mary Jane Owens and Karen Turner. She also leaves many nieces, nephews, friends and relatives who loved her dearly.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Socky; son, Bobby; grandson, Wayne A. Puckett; brothers, Nathaniel Payne and Benjamin Payne; sister, Doris Merrick; five brothers-in-law and two sisters-in-law; special cousins, Sam Anderson, Louise Ferrell, Almetta Weathersby and Delores Mason; and dear friends, Mae Sue Shade and Loretta Randle.

Homegoing celebration will begin at noon Monday, June 25, at New Life Church of Faith, 1419 N. Bowman Ave. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of the service. Officiating: Pastor Roland Brown. Interment will be at Danville National Cemetery. Leek & Sons Funeral Home, 304 E. Williams St., in charge of arrangements.
