Doris Ruth Slusser

— Doris Ruth Slusser, 99, of Danville, died Thursday, Nov. 1, 2012, at Colonial Manor.

Service will begin at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 5, at First Presbyterian Church, 100 Franklin St., Danville, with the Rev. Jimmy Hopper officiating. Visitation will be 9:30-10:30 a.m. Monday at the church.

Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 100 Franklin St., Danville, IL 61832.

Doris was born May 3, 1913, the daughter of James Carroll and Bertha Harper Slusser in Wilton, Ark.

She graduated from Danville High School in 1932, plus completed one year of business school. She worked as an office secretary for the Boy Scouts of America office in Danville.

During World War II, she was employed by Firestone Retail Sales as office and credit manager after which she became office secretary for Dr. John S. Curtis upon his return from military service. Later she joined the staff of the Veterans Affairs hospital, where she served in various capacities in the personnel office and retired as chief, recruitment and placement in 1975.

She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church since 1936, where she served in a wide range of volunteer activities and committees. She held office in the women’s association and was a leader in her church circles.

Her main interests, in addition to her church, included bowling, golf, knitting, cooking, photography and volunteering for several civic and health organizations. In addition, she traveled extensively throughout the world and was an avid reader of travel literature.

She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant brother.

She is survived by her sister, Audrey S. Oswalt, with whom she shared her home.
