Charles S. “Sid” Johns

HOOPESTON — Charles S. “Sid” Johns, 87, of Hoopeston, passed away at 8:39 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, 2013, at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.

He was born on July 11, 1925, in Marion. He was the son of Charlie and Bertie (Hudgens) Johns. Sid married Barbara Eastman on Aug. 7, 1943. She passed away on Dec. 18, 1997. Sid later married Joann (Gudeman) Young on Dec. 11, 1999, at the Community Church of the Nazarene in Hoopeston. She survives in Hoopeston.

Sid is also survived by six daughters, Sandra LaFrance of Bourbonnais, Pamela Okeli of Terre Haute, Ind., Paula (Tim) Paxton of Rankin, Sheila (Keith) Abbott of Urbana, Darla (Brian) Nooyan of Green Bay, Wisc., and Pam (Paul Peterson) Young of Green Bay, Wisc.; two sons, Kevin (Kim) Young of St. Joseph and Keith (Jeannie) Young of Rankin; and two sisters, Violet Jeter of Marion and Fran Abney of Topeka, Kan. He is also survived by 21 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, expecting one more great-grandchild, and six nephews.

Sid was preceded in death by his parents, brother, two infant sisters, two brothers-in-law and a son-in-law.

Sid worked as an inventory specialist at Kroger and later owned his own potato chip franchise known as Charles Chips. He later worked at National Gas Pipe Line for many years as a mechanic where he later retired. After his retirement, Charles worked at the Super Car Wash. Charles was a board member of the Community of the Nazarene Church and the Multi Agency. Sid volunteered his time at the Rankin Food Share and Chris Senior Services in Danville. He also volunteered at the Salvation Army of Kankakee and the Adult Day Care of Kankakee where he installed many life lines for seniors. Sid served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. During that time he served in Guadalcanal, Okinawa, Guam, China and Pearl Harbor. Sid was always in good humor, even after his retirement he was always helping someone. He never met a stranger. Sid loved his family and extended family very much and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

A visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21, 2013, at Anderson Funeral Home, 427 E. Main St. Hoopeston. Funeral services will be held following the visitation at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21, 2013, at Anderson Funeral Home with Pastor Jeff Alexander officiating. A visitation will also be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013, at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home, 800 North Market St., Marion. Funeral services will be held following the visitation at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013, at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home. Burial will be at County Line Cemetery in Creal Springs, with military rites to follow.
