GLENDALE, Calif. —
Clarence “C.W.” Honkala, 75, of Glendale, Calif., died Monday, Jan. 21, 2013, in the city of Glendale, Calif.
He was born Nov. 21, 1937, in Duluth, Minn., to Alfred and Martha (Glader) Honkala and raised by foster parents, Byron and Ila Gunnarson of Hermantown (Adolph), Minn., and by Herbert and Vivian (Honkala) Huard of Carlton, Minn., and now Duluth, Minn.
C.W. attended Hermantown schools for 10 years and graduated from Carlton High School in 1955. He was awarded a “North Star” football scholarship to the University of Minnesota, Duluth, but also attended Bemidji State of Minnesota, North Park of Chicago and Danville Area Community College, where he received his management marketing degree and was a member of the dean’s list.
C.W. was a self-employed insurance broker, general agent and sales manager for over 40 years. He was a graduate of Life Underwriter Training Council and received his LUTC designation. He received numerous company sales/management awards and also received these industry awards: National Quality Award, National Health Quality Award and National Sales Achievement Award.
He was a former member of Danville Life Underwriters and served as vice president, education and training chairman and program director.
He served in the U.S. Army as a dental lab technician, graduated from Brooke Medical Center, San Antonio, Texas, and served in Europe. He was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 18 John Unger, Danville.
He also was active in his community as a franchise holder and head coach of the Danville Broncos youth football team as well as a coach and manager of youth baseball.
C.W. and wife, Felicidad, moved to Glendale, Calif., in 1993, where he attended acting and voiceover schools and became a member of the Screen Actors Guild.
He performed mainly in commercials, educational and industrial films. He also was a member of Elks Lodge 1289 in Glendale, Calif.
Clarence was preceded in death by his parents; foster parents, Byron and Ila Gunnarson; three brothers, Delbert and Maynard Honkala and Marvin Honkala Gunnarson; two foster brothers, Lowell and Richard Gunnarson; and one sister, Dory Nelson Honkala.
He is survived by his wife, Felicidad; one son, Kyle Honkala of Petersburg; two daughters, Thelithia (Paul) McCarty of Springhill, Fla., and Yvonne (Daniel) Buckley of Fort Wayne, Ind.; one stepdaughter, Rowena Anonas of Glendale, Calif.; three stepsons, Victor Anonas of Glendale, Calif., and Aris and Dindo Anonas of Manila, Philippines; one brother, Will (Doris) Honkala of St. Paul, Minn.; four sisters, Vivian Huard of Duluth, Dolly (Larry) Wood of Two Harbors, Minn., Marilyn (Lee) Fawcett and Cheryl Schinigo of Duluth, Minn.; and one foster sister, Ila “Sis” (Jack) Meisner of Proctor, Minn.; 13 grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews; also, two sisters-in-law, Char Gunnarson, of Cloquet, Minn., and Minette Honkala, of Duluth, Minn.
Cremation and burial will take place Thursday, Jan. 31, at Forest Lawn Memorial-Parks and Mortuaries, Glendale, Calif.
