Cyril E. “Cy” Diskin

RANKIN — Cyril E. “Cy” Diskin, 86, of Rankin, passed away at 9:10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 10, 2012, at his home.

Cy was born Jan. 27, 1926, in Melvin, the son of Cyril W. and Margaret (Cain) Diskin.

He married Margaret “Maggie” Olson on Nov. 4, 1950, in Penfield. She survives.

He also is survived by one son, Brian “Sam” (Linda) Diskin of Fithian; one daughter, Vanessa (Don) Skinner of Rankin; four grandchildren, Melissa (Bill) Egolf and Shane (Rebecca) Diskin, both of Rankin, Terra (Eddie) Mullins of Urbana, and Cyril W. Diskin of Fithian; five great-grandchildren, Alyssa and Cooper Egolf, Kelsee Bell, and Olivia and Fletcher Diskin; one brother, Donald (MaryAnn) Diskin of Rankin; and one sister, Rita (Ralph) Vogel of Rankin.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Edward and James Diskin; and one sister, Katherine Ketchum.

Cy attended Rankin High School and was drafted into the United States Marine Corps. He served in the Marines from 1941 to 1943, serving during World War II. Cy was a member in good standing for 46 years with Iron Workers Local 380 in Champaign and retired in 1988. He received his 45-year membership pin in November 2011. He was a member of Cissna Park American Legion Post 527.

Cy was known for his meticulous lawn care he provided to several people in Rankin. He loved playing baseball and softball, where he played as a catcher until the age of 62. Cy’s greatest experience was to be able to take part of the World War II Memorial Honor Flight on June 7, 2011, when he was accompanied by his son.

A celebration of Cy’s life will begin at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 14, at Knapp Funeral Home in Rankin, with Pastor Janet Longston Scott officiating. Burial will be in Rankin Union Cemetery, with full military honors conducted by the Cissna Park American Legion Post 527. Visitation will be 3-8 p.m. Thursday at Knapp Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Cy’s name to the Rankin Lions Club or to the Cissna Park American Legion Post 527. Wolfe-Blurton Funeral Home of Hoopeston is assisting the family with arrangements.
