Helen Schedel

POTOMAC — Helen Schedel, 97, died peacefully at her home in Tallahassee, Fla., on Oct. 15, 2012.

Helen was born July 30, 1915, in Fargo, N.D., and was adopted four months later by August and Mary (Grube) Schedel.

She was a graduate of the Metropolitan Bible School in Waukesha, Wis. Her entire life was dedicated to Christian service and missionary endeavors. She never married and was the last living member of her immediate family.

Her connection to this area came as she was one of the leaders of the Mt. Moriah Children’s Camps in the 1950s near Jamesburg and served on the originating board of the Wescove Christian School (1954-1978) in Potomac. She was instrumental in starting a Mission Sunday School among underprivileged children in Chicago, which continued on the near-west side for many years.

She had a long-term connection with the Potomac area. She also was involved in other mission work in New York City, Hammond, Ind., as well as among the Navajo Indians in New Mexico and across the border in Mexico. She eventually retired from a mission supply organization in the Chicago area and moved to Tallahassee, where she continued her mission and volunteer work.

Memorial service at: 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, at New Hope Community Church in Fairmount, officiated by the Rev. Ron Weishaar and the Rev. Dan Harstad. Burial to follow in the Potomac Cemetery, next to her father who at one time managed the Wescove Farm in Potomac.

Memorials may be made to the Ripe for Harvest mission organization in her memory.

Arrangements are being handled by the Robison Chapel of Catlin.
