Joan S. Myers, 89, of Danville, passed away Saturday morning, Feb. 6, 2010, at the Hawthorne Inn.
She was born May 17, 1920, in rural Georgetown, the daughter of Herschel and Goldie Sheets, both deceased, along with her brothers and sisters, June Vinson, Jane Neel and Jack Sheets.
She was united in marriage to James L. Myers on Feb. 3, 1943, on the Army Air Corps Base Chapel in Las Vegas, Nev. James preceded her in death in 2006. They were married for 63 loving years.
Surviving are their three children, Alan (Judy) of Danville, Dennis (Kathy) of Lake Geneva, Wis., and Mary of Huntley, Ill.; six grandchildren and their spouses, Jamie (Maggie) of Collierville, Tenn., Leah (Chris) of Chicago, Eric (Liz) of Baton Rouge, La., Erin (Nick) of St. Charles, Ill., Jonathan (Aubrey) of Fithian and Tim of Oxford, Ohio. In addition, Joan has five great-grandchildren, Douglas, Gabriella, Emma Lee, Teresa and Peyton, with another two on the way.
She graduated from Georgetown High School and then went on to Eastern Illinois University, earning her teaching certificate in 1940.
Joan was a lifelong resident of Ogden, where she was an active member of the Ogden Methodist Church. She taught elementary education for nearly 30 years, starting with the first two years at Douglas Grade School in Danville and Daniel Grade School in Tilton, and finishing the rest of her long and successful teaching career at Ogden Grade School. During that span she taught in every grade, K-8. She loved teaching students how to read, with the result that her students often indicated she inspired a true love of learning in them.
She also was actively involved in the activities and community projects of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Ogden Women’s Club and the Ogden Methodist Church women’s group. Joan was a talented seamstress, making clothes and other accessories for herself and her family. Her creativity led her to take up watercolor painting, with the result being many beautiful original works.
Joan had a green thumb, enjoying the planning, growing and tending of both a large annual vegetable and several flower gardens. She could be seen with Jim walking two miles every evening rain, snow or shine. A favorite pasttime of hers was playing cards with friends and family, particularly bridge and euchre, opting to “shoot the moon” whenever the opportunity arose.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 12, 2010, at Freese Funeral Home, 302 Grand Ave., St. Joseph, with the Rev. Mark Slatte officiating. Burial will be in Stearns Cemetery, Fithian. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Ogden Rose Library, PO Box 297, Ogden, IL, 61859.
