DANVILLE —
Fremont “Monty” Walters, 86, of Dan-ville, passed away at 9:03 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, at Carle Hospital in Urbana.
He was born Jan. 24, 1926, to Fremont Sr. and Ruby (Salmans) Walters in Danville.
He married Patricia Quigley on Jan. 25, 1948. She survives.
Other survivors include sons, Terry (Sheila) Walters of Champaign, Monty Lee (Lizz) Walters of Oregon, and Patrick “Hoss” Walters of Danville; grandchildren, Danielle, Lee, Chelsea, Cameron and Anna; great-grandchildren, Alyssa, Cheyenne, Selena, Bailey, Shantel and Mallerie; brother Tom; and sisters, Betty Lou, Helen, Ruth Ann and Beverly.
Monty was preceded in death by his parents; brother Jack; sisters, Mary Jane, Margery and Margurite; and grandson Caleb.
A graduate of Danville High, Monty served his country during World War II as a member of the Navy. Upon returning home he went to work for the Illinois Bell Telephone Co. as an inner-office communication maintenance repair man.
Monty was a 32nd degree Mason of the Olive Branch Lodge 38, a member of the Danville Gao Grotto, an active parishioner of the Danville United Church of Christ and a proud member of the Telephone Pioneers, who met regularly over breakfast.
An avid outdoorsman, Monty loved camping, golfing, fishing, feeding his squirrels and traveling, as well as dancing with his wife, leading his son’s scout troop and cheering for his favorite sports teams.
His adventurous nature led him to great heights where he skydived, rode in hot air balloons and parasailed. Monty will be remembered as a man who loved his family, had a great sense of humor and showed his generosity through the money clips he made for people out of pop tabs and paper clips.
A celebration of Monty’s life will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, at Sunset Funeral Home in Danville, with Pastor Connie Moodie of Danville United Church of Christ officiating and burial at Sunset Memorial Park. Visitation will be 3-7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, A Life Celebration Home, in Danville, with Masonic and Gao Grotto funeral rites performed at 7.
Memorials may be made in Monty’s name to Danville United Church of Christ, the Humane Society, the Danville Food Pantry or a charity of the donor’s choice.
Condolences may be left at www.sunsetfuneralhome.com.
