Leatrice Newsome

DANVILLE — Leatrice Newsome was born March 2, 1924, in Bridgeport Copiah County, Miss., to Joe Newsome and Maggie Smith Berry. To this union, eight children were born. Leatrice was the eldest.

Five siblings preceded her in death, J.C. Newsome of Bridgeport, Miss., Nina B. Forthenberry of Danville, A.C. Newsome of Detroit, Mich., B.J. Newsome of Danville and Lottie Mae Stringer of Detroit, Mich.

Living siblings are Emma Davis of California and Pinie Rowell of Danville.

She also was preceded in death by her first husband, S.T. Newsom of Jefferson Davis, Miss., and second husband, Oscar Williams of Chicago. She also was preceded by four grandchildren, Kevin Newsome, Marquette Newsome, Kenneth Sims and Dexter Patton, all of Danville.

Leatrice is the mother of seven daughters, Maggie Sims (Arthur Young), Betty Patton (Jerry Patton), Shirley Glenn ( Finas Glenn), JoAnne Cunningham (Lee Cunningham), Laverne Newsome, Gloria Newsome (Carl Washington) and Della Newsome, all from Danville.

Leatrice was a member of the Laura Lee Fellowship Golden Seniors. She enjoyed her outings whenever it was possible for her to attend meetings. She enjoyed being around her family, traveling to Mississippi and attending church. She was a member of East End Church of God under the leadership of Bishop I.L. Taylor and Mother Vivian Taylor in Danville.

She also leaves to cherish her memory 29 grandchildren, 77 great-grandchildren, 12 great-great-grandchildren, a multitude of nieces and nephews and friends as well.

A Homegoing Service will begin at noon Monday, Jan. 14, at New Life Church of Faith, 1419 N. Bowman Ave. Visitation will commence at 11 am. until the time of the service. Officiating: Bishop I.L. Taylor. Interment will be at Spring Hill Cemetery. Leek & Sons Funeral Home, 304 E. Williams St., is in charge of arrangements.
