COVINGTON, Ind. —
James Douglas Cunningham, a longtime resident of Covington, Ind., passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2013, at his home.
He was born on Dec. 12, 1945, in Danville to Dale and Elizabeth Cunningham.
He was raised on a farm outside Bismarck and graduated from Bismarck High School in 1964 and Southern Illinois University in 1968. He served in the Armed Forces from 1968-1971 in a military intelligence unit.
In July 1971, he married Jean Vedock in Johnstown, Pa. She survives.
Also surviving are a son, Christopher James, (Haley Miller), Chicago; a daughter, Cara Marie (Lee) Kneer; a grandson, James Christopher Kneer, Indianapolis; a brother, Dan (Cindy) Cunningham, Bismarck; and several nephews, nieces and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, uncles and aunts.
He farmed with his father and brother between 1971 and 1973. In 1973 he purchased Maple Corner Restaurant with his wife. He transformed a 50-seat restaurant that served primarily catfish to a 500-seat destination restaurant serving steak and seafood. The restaurant was sold in 2006. He successfully operated Maple Corner for 32 years, eight months and 24 days.
Jim was a member of the Indiana Restaurant Association and served on its board of directors for several years.
Since retirement he enjoyed working on his property and in his orchard. He was an avid fisherman and mushroom hunter. His family was his No. 1 priority, and he found companionship with his two dogs, Bella and Dottie.
He was a 32nd degree Mason and belonged to the Zorah and Covington Shrine clubs, the American Legion. Covington VFW Post 2395 Auxiliary, Knights of Pythias and the Rockville Elks Club.
A celebration of Jim’s life will be held at Sunset’s Covington Chapel, with visitation from 1-4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 9, and a service at 4 p.m. Jim’s remains will be cremated, and interment will be at Walnut Corner Church Cemetery, Bismarck, at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Jim’s name to: Riley’s Children Hospital, Indianapolis, or Shrine Children’s Hospital, St. Louis, Mo.
