GEORGETOWN — Venie Leoda Smith Brooks, 99, formerly of Georgetown, died Friday, Dec. 7, 2012, at her daughter’s home in Wilkesboro, N.C.

Mrs. Brooks was born Feb. 1, 1913, to Arthur and Mary Jane (Mamie) Harris Smith in Crumpler, N.C.

She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Queen Alpha Chapter No. 93 and the founder and president of the Roots of Love Family Reunion, now in its 34th year.

Among her passions in life was the importance of education. She started the Venie L. Brooks Scholarship Fund, which has helped many young people go to college. She loved volunteering at a local school, helping children with their reading skills.

Mrs. Brooks was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George H. Brooks; son, George C. Brooks; daughter, Phyllis Brooks Gray; two brothers, Marvin Smith and Clifford Smith; and sister, Mary Louise Smith Lomax.

Surviving are a son, Clyde H. Brooks and wife, Constance, of Bolingbrook; two daughters, E. Evonne Raglin and Jerrilyn Murray, both of Wilkesboro, N.C.; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; aunt, Mary Harris of Nottingham, Pa.; four nephews; four nieces; many cousins and friends who loved her dearly; and a special friend, Geraldine Nesbitt of Georgetown.

Funeral service will begin at 2 p.m. EST Saturday, Dec. 15, at the church she loved to attend, Rickard’s Chapel AME Zion Chapel, with her pastor the Rev. Richard K. Watts officiating. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. EST Friday night at Miller Funeral Service in North Wilkesboro, N.C.
