DANVILLE —
Alexander J. Urban, 73, of Danville, passed away at 7:40 p.m. on Oct. 8, 2012, at his home.
Alexander was born July 8, 1939, in East Chicago, the son of John and Wanita (Bean) Urban.
He married Wendie McMillin on Aug. 11, 1961, in Danville. She survives.
He is survived by one daughter, Stacie (John) Ballard of Hoopeston; one sister, Mary Ann (Donald E.) Welker of The Villages, Fla.; three nephews, Donald J. Welker of Indianapolis, Thomas Welker of Bloomington, and Mark A. Welker of Richmond, Ky.; two grandchildren, Jordan Ballard of Chicago and Alexis Ballard of Bismarck; and many special friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; Wendie’s parents, Hawk and Virgina McMillin; one sister-in-law, Lea Garza; and two nieces, Nina J. Welker and Diana Lyn Welker.
Alex was a member of the United States Army from 1957-1960. He then began working for Quaker Oats in Danville until retiring in 2006.
He was an Honorable Kentucky Colonel, receiving that honor in 1981. He was the Monarch of the Gao Grotto in 2007. He was a Master Mason of the Olive Branch Lodge 38. He loved sports, watching TV, going to his grandchildren’s sporting events, NASCAR and especially his family.
The family would like to give a special thanks to the Provena Cancer Center for the excellent care given to him by Dr. Soni, Dr. Labayog and staff; also, Dr. Sekar and Dr. Bobat and the staff of Provena 4 West for their care toward Alex and the amazing care given by hospice nurses Vicki, Lori and Evelyn.
A celebration of Alex’s life will begin at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 12, at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, A Life Celebration Home, in Danville, with Pastor Raymie Gordon officiating. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, at the funeral home, with Masonic rites starting at 8 p.m. Burial will take place at Sunset Memorial Park in Danville.
Memorials can be made in Alex’s name to Provena Cancer Center or the Gao Grotto Humanitarian Fund.
