HOOPESTON —
Edith Gladyne Winegardner, 95, passed away Thursday, Nov. 15, 2012, at Hoopeston Community Memorial Nursing Home in Hoopeston.
Edith was born May 30, 1917, in Muncie, a daughter of James and Margaret (Woodard) Minser.
She graduated from Oakwood High School in 1934. Following high school, she became a licensed beautician and worked in Champaign, Thomasboro and St. Joseph.
She met Claude Reed (Pat) Winegardner in Pence, Ind., and they were married on March 11, 1940, in Saint Louis, Mo. She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude, on July 30, 2007; and by her parents; an infant daughter, Margaret Sue; and her brother, Marion David Minser.
Survivors include four children, Carol (Robert) Shoop of Glasgow, Ky., Janet Gayle (Cronkhite) of Champaign, Judith (Kenneth) Steele of Kingman, Ind., and Steve (Dawn) Winegardner of Alvin.; a sister, Esther Boen of Georgetown; a sister-in-law, Betty Minser of Muncie; a sister-in-law, Mary Elizabeth Winegardner of Williamsport, Ind.; eight grandchildren, Brian (Donna) Shoop, Darrell (Angie) Shoop, Heather (Jared) Duzan, Debbie (Craig) Weidler, Susan Cronkhite, James (Cindy) Steele, Sherry (Robert) Wampler and Megan (Eric) Thomas; and 11 great-grandchildren, David, Jennifer and Zack Shoop, Nicholas and Amanda Weidler, Elizabeth, Jade and Darcy Steele, Amber Inlow, Ella and Utah Winegardner; and several nieces and nephews.
Edith was an active member of the Antioch Church of Christ for many years. She was the proud wife of a farmer and in later years became an energetic caregiver for the elderly, working until she was in her mid-80s.
She enjoyed reading, counted cross-stitch embroidery, gardening, cooking and entertaining. She loved visiting with friends and neighbors and sent cards and notes frequently. She often said her family meant everything to her, and she was happiest when surrounded by family during holidays and other celebrations. She collected and displayed angels everywhere in her home, and now she is one.
Funeral services will begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Antioch Church of Christ, with Pastor Earl Eells officiating. Visitation will be 3-6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 19, at Brown-Alkire Funeral Home. Burial will be in Rossville Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Antioch Church of Christ.
