Virginia Hart Murphy, 93, of Danville, passed away peacefully surrounded by family at 12:20 p.m. Dec. 9, 2012, at her home.
She was born Aug. 31, 1919, in Rochester, N.Y., to John F. and Lydia Vogt Hart.
Virginia grew up in Rochester and Geneva, N.Y. She graduated from DeSales High School in Geneva, N.Y., in 1937.
As a talented dancer, she appeared in several revues in the Finger Lakes Region.
During World War II, she joined the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps, took basic training at Oglethorpe, Ga., was stationed at Marsh Field, Calif., and attended officer’s training at Fort Des Moines, Iowa.
Virginia married Frank R. Murphy on March 14, 1944, at St. Stephen’s Church in Geneva, N.Y. They moved to Danville in 1958 for Frank’s association with Lauhoff Grain Company. They were happily married for 59 years.
Virginia was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church. She was active in the Danville community. She was the president of the Junior Auxiliary and later a member of the Senior Board of St. Elizabeth Hospital. She also was a member of the United Way, the Salvation Army, the Camilla group of the Danville Garden Club and Meals on Wheels. She was a former member of the Boat Club and Danville Country Club, where she was an avid golfer. She worked as an account executive with Channel 15 in Champaign.
Virginia enjoyed gardening and working in her yard. She loved being around her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and had a great fondness for watching the wildlife in her backyard.
Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Murphy, who passed away in April 2003; her parents, John and Lydia Hart; her sister, Jane Hart Nelson; and an infant son, Robert Lawrence Murphy.
Virginia is survived by five children, Carol (Alan) Lafoy of North Port, Fla., Patricia (Daniel) Rosinski of New Market, Md., Kathleen (Mark) Carley of Danville, Dr. F. Robert (Catherine) Murphy of Boulder, Colo., and Elizabeth Murphy of Danville; and her sister, Jacqueline Rogazione, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. She also is survived by her grandchildren, Todd (Katie) Lafoy, Amy Trammell, Brian Rosinski, Megan (Josh) Roe, Justin (Kim) Carley, Patrick (Amy) Carley, Sara Carley, Sian Murphy, Carys Murphy, Jennifer (Adam) Davis and Pfc. Robby Gold; and 12 great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank Evie and the entire staff of the Provena Hospice program as well as everyone at Provena Home Healthcare for all of the wonderful care extended over the past few weeks. Additionally, a warm thank you to Dr. Naveed Sadiq and his staff for the kindness and care they gave Virginia over the past several years.
A service to celebrate her life will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, with Father Greg Nelson officiating. Following the service, she will be laid to rest next to her loving husband, Frank, at Danville National Cemetery. A visitation for friends and family will be 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12, at Pape Memorial Home, 10 E. Williams, Danville.
