George Pastrikos, 78, of Danville, passed away at 12:55 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013, at the Veterans Affairs Illiana Health Care System in Danville.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 22, at Pape Memorial Home, 10 E. Williams St. in Danville, with Pastor Kent Tibben officiating. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to: Danville Lutheran School, Trinity Campus, 824 E. Main St. in Danville, or the American Cancer Society or American Heart Association.
George was born Sept. 26, 1934, in Endicott, N.Y., to Michael and Anna (Tzivanis) Pastrikos. He attended Endicott, N.Y., grade schools and high school, graduating in 1952. He joined the U.S. Navy on the USNTC San Diego and was later transferred to the U.S. Carrier Hornet in San Diego.
He met his wife, Barbara Tabor, who was also serving on the USNTC. They were married Aug. 1, 1956, at the chapel on the base. George served four years active and four years inactive, being honorably discharged in 1961. The couple then moved back to New York where he worked as a chef. They moved to Danville in 1960.
George started working for Grab It Here as an assistant manager in the meat department and was later promoted to manager at the new store on South Gilbert. He managed the meat department at IGA in Covington and later the store in Catlin. He then became a partner in the Big Four Tavern and also worked at the Danville Correctional Center, where he eventually retired. He went back to work at Danville Lutheran School as the cook before retiring again in 2007.
George is a confirmed member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod. He had served as an elder and usher and volunteered for the summer lunch program. He was a member of American Legion Post 210 and a past member of the Elks. In his free time George enjoyed playing poker, reading fiction, especially Stephen King, watching Jeopardy faithfully as well as Gunsmoke and Law and Order. He also loved nature, especially feeding the birds. And he loved his dog, Sheba.
George leaves behind his wife, Barbara, of 56 ½ years; his son, Michael; a sister, Evelyn Baccman; a brother-in-law, Henry McGruder; nieces, Rose Lerche and Stephanie McDonald; and uncles, Tom (Florence) Tzivanis and Harry (Ann) Tzivanis. He is also survived by a brother-in-law, Dan (Joyce) Tabor; a sister-in-law, Cynthia Belton; and lots of cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, George Ingram; a sister, Anastacia McGruder; a brother, Steve Capousis; two nephews, Eric Seelman and Michael Lerche; and in-laws, Dorothy and Lowell Chappell and Emerson and Betty Tabor.
