Douglas Alan Switzer

WEST LEBANON, Ind. — Douglas Alan Switzer, 63, of West Lebanon, Ind., died at 5:16 p.m. EDT Sunday, March 10, 2013, at St. Vincent Williamsport Hospital.

He was born in Danville on March 9, 1950.

He is survived by his parents, Alan J. and Betty Jo (Parrett) Switzer; son, Blake A (Tiffany) Barker-Switzer; daughter, Chelsea A Barker-Switzer; grandson, Kaleb A Barker-Switzer; fiancée, Brenda Park; sister, Susan (Tom) Pearcy; brother, Jim (Pam) Switzer; nephews, Bret Myers, Bart Myers and Jason Switzer; niece, Marcie Wolf; and cousins, Peggy Hayman, Debbie Clabaugh and Herb Parrett. He was preceded in death by his cousin Janice Switzer.

Doug was a graduate of Seeger High School in 1968, where he was active in sports. He was a member of the Seeger Indians 1967 Sectional Championship Team. He attended Carroll College in Waukesha, Wis., on a basketball scholarship and graduated in 1972. He obtained a master’s degree from Moorehead State University in Moorehead, Ky.

Doug led an active career in coaching basketball throughout his life. He was a coach at Bob Cousy’s basketball camp in 1970 and served as an assistant coach for Valparaiso and Moorehead State universities and Wabash and Wabash Valley Colleges. He returned to Warren County, Ind., in 1982 where he operated his own rental property business and worked on his family’s farm outside of State Line, Ind.

In recent years, Doug was active in his community by coaching a fourth-grade intramural basketball team as a volunteer through Seeger. Doug’s absolute love of sports and children made a perfect combination of what a true “coach” is supposed to be. He never missed an opportunity to teach the fundamentals of basketball to any young person who showed interest. Doug enjoyed going to Seeger High School games and could often be found sitting in the front center row supporting the Patriots throughout their season.

Doug will be missed by all those who knew and loved him and were fortunate to have their lives impacted by him.

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. EDT Wednesday, March 13, at Shelby Funeral Home, Covington, Ind. Funeral services will begin at 2 p.m. EDT Thursday March 14, at Shelby Funeral Home, with Rev. Jan Reeder officiating. Burial will follow in West Lebanon Cemetery.
