HOOPESTON — Melville “Mel” R. Richardson, 79, of Hoopeston, formerly of Spencer, Ind., died Thursday morning, March 7, 2013, at Heritage Health Nursing Home in Hoopeston.

He was born Nov. 20, 1933, in Brown County, Ind., to Lester and Maggie (Kent) Richardson.

He was a truck driver most of his life until experiencing a massive stroke in 1980.

He derived his joy in life from his family, trucking, the outdoors and bluegrass music. Along with many of his brothers, friends and extended family, he sang and played bluegrass music. He played the mandolin, guitar, banjo and fiddle.

He is survived by five daughters, Rebecca Milburn of Hoopeston, Brenda Richardson of Freedom, Ind., Linda Davis and Sue McHaley, both of Spencer, Ind., and Cheryl Ringler of Martinsville, Ind.; one sister, Elsie Doige of Spencer; eight grandchildren, Christina, Robert Jr., Michael and Bradley Milburn, Miranda Ringler-Fell, Jesse Ringler, Richard Jenkins and Gabe McHaley; 13 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; nine brothers, Ira, Herman, Paul, Arthur, Chester, Glen, James, Joseph and Lester; three sisters, Esther, Madge and Betty; and one granddaughter, Cora Richardson.

There will be a celebration of life for family and friends 5-7 p.m. EDT Saturday, March 16, at the Pine Woods clubhouse in Spencer, Ind.
