Edward J. McLaughlin

HOOPESTON — Edward J. McLaughlin, 77, of Hoopeston, passed away at 7:55 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 20, 2012, at his home in Hoopeston.

He was born July 2, 1935, in Chicago, the son of Emmett P. McLaughlin and Irene Margaret (Kenny) McLaughlin.

Edward married Ellen J. Gasser on Jan. 9, 1954, at St. Lawrence Church in Chicago. She survives in Hoopeston.

He is survived by three sons, Edward P. (Cathy) McLaughlin of Lowell, Ind., Michael W. (Teri) McLaughlin of Grant Park, and James D. McLaughlin of Pekin; four daughters, Linda (Danny) West of Hoopeston, Debra (Dennis) Morgan of Hoopeston, Kathy (Rich) Purkhiser of Crown Point, Ind., and Karen (Wayne) Hansen of Grant Park; one brother, Eugene (Ana) McLaughlin of Chicago; one sister, Rita Browning of Lakeland, Fla.; 22 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Irene Spellman; one granddaughter, Amber L. West; and one niece, Kimberly McLaughlin.

Edward worked as a sheet metal mechanic for the Murphy-Miller Heating and Cooling Company. While working as a sheet metal mechanic, he belonged to the Local 73 Sheet Metal Union. He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Hoopeston. Edward enjoyed fishing up in Hayward, Wis., camping, making wood crafts and doing metal work.

He would teach his crafting skills to his family members, especially to his grandkids and neighbor kids. Edward was very generous to his family and friends; he would give children rides to school and donated to local schools and Catholic organizations. His greatest enjoyment came from just spending time with his family and friends. He will be sadly missed by all who loved him.

Rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, at St. Anthony Catholic Church, 423 S. 3rd St., Hoopeston, with Father Bowan Schmidt officiating.
