Mary Elizabeth Vandenberg

MEDFORD, Ore. — Mary Elizabeth Vandenberg, 88, of Medford, Ore., previously of Rossville, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013, in Medford, surrounded by her sister, Ethel, and close friends.

She was born Oct. 26, 1924, in Hoopeston, the daughter of Walter and Sara Dessa Vandenberg.

She was preceded in death by both parents; and brothers Wilbur, Edgar and Robert “Dale” Vandenberg.

A lifetime health care provider serving her country through the GI nursing program, she graduated from the University of Illinois, and earned her master’s from the University of Denver.

The bulk of her career was in the Portland, Ore., area, establishing and overseeing many field-related programs in family counseling. She was named Oregon Social Worker of the year in 1981.

In 1988, Mary retired to the Rouge-Valley Manor in Medford.

Surviving are her siblings, Ethel (John) Veach of Medford, and Daniel (Mary) Vandenberg, of Hoopeston; and several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be conducted at Rouge-Valley Health Center, with graveside ceremony at a future date in the Rossville Cemetery.
