NEWPORT, Ind. — Eleanor Burroughs, 79, of Newport, passed away at 12:08 p.m. EST Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013, at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

She was born Dec. 24, 1933, in Newport, Ind., the daughter of the late Frayne and Thelma Myers Whittington.

She was formerly married to Bradley Wickens. She later married Jack D. Burroughs on March 17, 1972, in Lyford, Ind. He survives.

Other survivors include her children, Troy (Ann) Wickens and Todd (Kim) Wickens, both of Cayuga, Ind., Teila (Joseph) Luth of Perrysville, Ind.; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three sisters, Elaine (Loren) Kinderman of Tangier, Ind., Janet Froese of Bristol, Ind., and Judy (Joe) Frink of Newport, Ind.; and special friends, Brenda Wickens and Rick Jumps. Eleanor was preceded in death by her brother, Ed Whittington; and brother-in-law, Sam Froese.

Eleanor formerly worked as a secretary for the ASCS office in Newport. She was a member of the Newport Friends Church, serving as the current pianist and treasurer, Wacky Weeders Garden Club and the Newport American Legion Auxiliary Unit 184, serving as chaplain. Eleanor was a 1951 graduate of Newport High School.

She enjoyed gardening, working on crafts, searching for arrowheads and other artifacts, cooking, baking and antiquing. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Funeral services: 10 a.m. EST Thursday, Jan. 10, at DeVerter Funeral Home in Cayuga, Ind. Officiating: Pastor Garry Hendricks. Burial: Thomas Cemetery in Newport, Ind. Visitation: 5-9 p.m. EST Wednesday, Jan. 9, at the funeral home.
