Richard W. Stalter

Richard W. Stalter, 87, of Covington, Ind., passed away at 9:30 a.m. EST Thursday, Feb. 14, 2013, concluding a brief stay at The Waters of Covington.

He was born Oct. 13, 1925, in Ludlow, the son of Edson L. and Grace (Grider) Stalter. His first marriage was to Lenora Hampton; she preceded him in death in 1957. His second marriage was to Marilyn R. Martin on July 2, 1961; she preceded him in death in November 1978.

He also was preceded in death by a sister, Eva Jean Downey.

Surviving family include three daughters, Deborah Stalter of St. Petersburg, Fla., Nancy Jo Stalter of Springfield, Valli (Kenneth) Shumaker of Covington, Ind.; a son, Craig (Donna) Stalter of Veedersburg, Ind.; a sister, Myra Lynn (Leon) Long of Fort Worth, Texas; two brothers, Bernard G. (friend, Darlene) Stalter of Chandler, Ariz., and Cyrus George (Janis) Stalter of Gifford; and four grandchildren, Alexis (Clinton) Froedge, Cole Stalter, Peyt Shumaker and Kendall Shumaker.

Richard attended Rantoul High School and Illinois Commercial College. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Asiatic Pacific American Theater aboard the USS Makin Island aircraft carrier. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion. After the war and into the 1960s, along with his brothers, he owned and operated Stalter Standard service stations in Champaign and Oakwood.

In 1971 he moved his family to the Indiana farm he had purchased in 1962, land both at his residence and in the Cades Hollow area that he collectively referred to as “Coal Creek Ranch.” He loved his time spent on this farm, where he raised beef cattle and several parade teams of draft horses and draft ponies. Richard was a man who was continuously engaged in thought to the very end, contemplating both aspects of life and business decisions to be made.

Memorial service will be held at a later date, with burial at Coal Creek Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to Dickerson Funeral Home in Veedersburg.
