Michael “Mike” William Atwood

DECATUR — Michael “Mike” William Atwood, 65, of Decatur, passed away on March 9, 2013.

Mike was born Nov. 18, 1947, in Danville, the son of Glen E. and Harriet M. Atwood.

He married Patricia J. Sheets on Aug. 23, 1970.

Mike graduated from Danville High School in 1966. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1967. He served in Vietnam from 1967 to 1969 in the 7th Battalion, 13th Field Artillery Regiment. This began a military career that lasted over 39 years. He retired as a master sergeant from the U.S. Army Reserve in 2007. He was a graduate of the Army First Sergeant course.

During his career, Mike cared for hundreds of soldiers and taught them how to excel. They reciprocated by calling him “Top.”

Among his individual decorations and awards are the Meritorious Service Medal, two Army Commendation Medals, the Army Achievement Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal with three Service Stars, the Vietnam Service Medal with three Campaign Stars, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. His unit awards are the Army Meritorious Unit and the Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation. One of Mike’s Army Commendation Medals was awarded for saving the life of a man who had been involved in a traffic accident and was trapped in a burning vehicle.

Mike retired in 2012 after 19 years with Hartwig Inc. of St. Louis, Mo., as a service manager. Previously, he was the plant engineer at Wabel Tool Company in Decatur. While employed there, Mike received the 1992 Plant Engineer of the Year Award for the Central Illinois Region from the American Institute of Plant Engineers. Previously, he was the operations manager and field engineer at Indcon Inc. in Decatur. He was a past president for Chapter 126 of the American Institute of Plant Engineers. He had been a member of the Instrument Society of America and the Society of Trigologist and Lubrication Engineers. Mike also had served for three years on the Curriculum Advisory Council for the Technical Education Center in Decatur. He was commissioned as a Kentucky Colonel, the Commonwealth’s highest honor for noteworthy accomplishments and outstanding public service.

His interests included world and military history, electronics and circuitry design, amateur radio and traveling. He enjoyed a wide variety of music and attending concerts. Mike was an extremely hard-working and generous man who adamantly believed in working for what he wanted and giving to those of his choice.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Mary Alice.

He is survived by his son, Michael (Logann) of Terre Haute, Ind.; daughter, Jennifer (Corey) Venters of Macon; sister Patricia Gamble of Glen Burnie, Md.; brothers, John (Huan) of Colonial Heights, Va., Paul, of Kokomo, Ind., David, of Fort Worth, Texas, James, of Champaign; eight grandchildren; eight nieces; and seven nephews.

A graveside service will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 14, at Camp Butler National Cemetery, Springfield.

Memorials are asked to be given to cancer research.
