John “Tom” Acree, 84, of Danville, passed away at 4:12 a.m. Monday, May 25, 2009, at Carle Foundation Hospital Urbana.
Tom was born on March 22, 1925, in Danville, the son of John and Mabel (Lee) Acree. He married Ardith Shumaker on Feb. 24, 1945, in Danville. She preceded him in death on Aug. 5, 1995. Tom then married Cathy Wynn on Dec. 5, 1995 in Danville.
He is survived by: his wife, Cathy; one son, Tom (Sue) Acree of Danville; two daughters, Jamie (Wayne) Anders of Danville and Susan (Rick) Stephens of Carmel, Ind.; two step-sons, Raynor (Sandra) Hannah of Gulfport, Miss. and Chamberlin (Yolanda) Hannah of Burleson, Texas; one sister, Ruth (Dale) Firebaugh of Danville; four grandchildren, Christy (David) Hughes of Danville, Amy Acree of Champaign, Jason Cozatt of Indianapolis and Josh (Chelsea) Acree of Urbana; two step-grandchildren, Keara Hannah and Chamberlin Hannah, both of Burleson Texas; and two great-grandchildren, Lacey Clark of Danville and Cutler Wiggins of Champaign.
Tom was a graduate of Danville High School. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Co-rps, serving during World War II. He was the Admiral’s guard aboard the USS Appalachian in the South Pacific. Tom was a Realtor-Broker for 53 years, owning his own business, Acree Real Estate. He was a member of the Danville Area Board of Realtors, Illinois Association of Realtors and National Association of Realtors. Tom was a member of the Faith Baptist Church. He was civic minded and helped on many projects in the community. He was also an avid golfer.
A celebration of life for Tom Acree will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, May 29, 2009, at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, with Pastor Al Rudie officiating. Entombment will be in Sunset Memorial Park. Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m., Thursday, May 28, 2009, at the funeral home. Memorials may be made in Tom’s name to Faith Baptist Church or Marine Corps Toys for Tots campaign.
